How to care for Cotton

The ultimate in comfort, breathability, and versatility, cotton is a staple fabric for year-round wear. We love a cotton blouse paired with skirts, denim, or layered under knitwear for an effortless, everyday look. As one of the most widely used natural fibres, cotton is durable yet delicate and requires proper care to maintain its softness and longevity. In this guide, we’ll share expert tips from our product development team on how to wash, dry, and store your cotton pieces to ensure they stay looking fresh for years to come.

Freshening

To keep your cotton garments fresh between washes, hang them in a well-ventilated area to air out and release any odours. This can be done after each wear to keep your clothes fresh before storing them away. If you notice any wrinkles, you can use a steamer or lightly iron your cotton pieces on a low heat setting. For pet hair or lint buildup, use a lint roller or fabric brush to keep your garments looking pristine.

Spot Cleaning

For small stains or spills, spot clean your cotton pieces by gently dabbing the area with warm water and a mild detergent. Be cautious not to scrub too hard, as this can weaken the fibres or cause discoloration. Addressing stains as soon as they occur will prevent them from setting into the fabric. Once cleaned, let the item air dry before folding or storing it away.

Washing

To extend the life of your cotton garments, wash them after every few wears or when visibly dirty. Cotton is generally machine-washable, but it's always best to check the care label. For everyday washing, we recommend turning your cotton items inside out and washing on a gentle cycle with cool to warm water. Use a mild detergent to prevent wear and tear over time. If your cotton pieces are more delicate, such as embroidered or lace-detailed items, consider hand washing them in cool water to be extra gentle.

Drying

Avoid using a dryer on high heat for your cotton garments, as this can lead to shrinkage. Instead, air dry your cotton pieces by laying them flat or hanging them in a shaded, airy space. If you do choose to use a dryer, select a low heat setting to minimise any damage. Always remove garments promptly to prevent wrinkles from setting in.

Storing

Proper storage is key to keeping your cotton pieces in good condition. Ensure your clothes are fully dry before folding and storing them in a cool, dry place to avoid mildew or mould growth. Cotton garments should be folded rather than hung, as hanging can sometimes lead to stretching over time, especially for heavier items. For long-term storage, consider storing cotton items in breathable garment bags to protect them from dust and pests.
